Etchells Fleet 13 Fall Series & Season Championship Report

A Waterspout made for interesting conditions at the November One Design Weekend

The Fall Series wrapped up with an exciting November One Design Weekend (ODW). While the September and October regattas featured typical light-air San Diego conditions, squalls kept the fleet off the water on Saturday in November. The Race Committee expertly squeezed in four races on Sunday despite shifty winds—and even a waterspout on the course!

With the Etchells Worlds just around the corner, 26 boats turned out for the November ODW, delivering stiff competition. As host of the 2025 North American Championship and the 2026 Etchells World Championship in May, Fleet 13 continues to see strong growth and increased participation across the West Coast Spring Series.

Anyone interested in learning more about the Etchells class or becoming active in the fleet is encouraged to contact the Fleet 13 at admin@etchellsfleet13.com.

About our Fleet Championship Teams

USA 969 – Buschido
Chris Busch started the season strong, winning two of the four events in the Etchells West Coast Spring Series (WCSS) and continuing that dominance throughout the year. Busch’s crew included bowman Patrick Powell, Chuck Sinks, and Ben Mitchell, who rotated through the middle position mid-season.

USA 1515 – The Martian
Marvin Beckmann of Houston, Texas sailed with Parker Mitchell, Cater Cameron, Poppy Card, and Eddie Adams. A former Etchells World Champion, Beckmann has been a frequent competitor at SDYC events and recently joined the club, enjoying more regular trips to San Diego.

USA 986 – Rhino
Bruce Nelson’s crew included Carter Cameron, Eric Heim, and Paula Schmidt. USA 986 has been at the top of the Fleet 13 standings for years and continued that tradition with a strong finish, including a win at the October One Design Weekend.

USA 1151 – SPOT
George Szabo sailed with Ian Trotter and JC Hermus. As a Star Class World Champion and Snipe North American Champion, it’s no surprise that Szabo quickly found his stride in the Etchells.

USA 1226 – Capricorn
Ethan Doyle sailed with his son Harrison Doyle, Matt Hecht, and Brad Rodi. Hailing from the Bay Area, Doyle has been a regular competitor in Fleet 13 events for many years.

USA 1183 – Jack
Bill Jenkins sailed with middle JC Langlois and bowman Alex Mieczkowski. Although this was Bill’s first season as helmsman, he and JC have sailed together aboard Jack for many years.

USA 1263 – Blue Fin
Mike Terry sailed with Marshall Harrington, Jon Mendham, and Fred Hill. Mike served as Fleet Treasurer this year and will step into the Fleet Captain role in 2026.
