SDYCSF Etchells U30 Program
The mission of the San Diego Yacht Club Sailing Foundation (“SDYCSF”); a non-profit organization, is to provide encouragement, support and funding for local, national, and international amateur sailing activities including maritime education, training, facilities, equipment and competition.
Given this mission, the SDYCSF would like to encourage and support participation by under 30-year-old (“U30”) sailors in Fleet 13 and SDYC Etchells events to broaden fleet appeal to younger sailors and to grow the fleet. For Etchells teams that meet the U30 requirements, the SDYCSF will fund entry fees in the West Coast Spring Series (“WCSS”) events, One Design Weekend (“ODW”) events, and when they occur in San Diego – National, North American and World Championship events. This program would be open to any San Diego area U30 Etchells teams - it is not limited to members or affiliates of the SDYC.
The following program requirements apply:
Age requirements
The intent of the program is to fund U30 programs. Thus, while the SDYCSF strongly encourages that all crew members be U30, the crew age requirements are:
The boat crew must have 2 of 3 (or 3 of 4) U30 team members, and
The dedicated skipper must be U30.
The single non-U30 crew member may be up to 35 years of age.
Crew geography
Open to generally San Diego based crews. We understand that people relocate away from San Diego and also fly into San Diego for Etchells racing weekends. This is not a "hard and fast" requirement, but the general idea is that this is for San Diego based teams.
Yacht club affiliation
Open to any San Diego area U30 Etchells teams - it is not limited to members or member affiliates of the SDYC.
Annual sign-up period
Beginning November 1 through the first event of the WCSS (the Bill Bennett Regatta, which is typically held mid-January).
The members of the U30 crew and their birthdates/ages must be included in the request.
Contacts to sign up: Etchells Fleet 13 (admin@etchellsfleet13.com) who will forward the request to the SDYCSF, or directly to the SDYCSF (SDYCSF@gmail.com).
Annual commitment
An annual commitment is expected for participation in the program.
This annual commitment consists of:
Participation in all four WCSS events, and
Participation in at least three ODW events.
What is paid?
The SDYCSF would fund the following expenses:
Etchells Fleet 13 annual dues/fees (skipper or crew fees),
Other Etchells organization fees (e.g., International), as required for regatta participation, and
WCSS regatta fees (all four races).
Reimbursed of expenses
Funding would be through submission of a reimbursement request.
An “expense report” sent to the SDYCSF bookkeeper would be required. The expense report would be expected to be “ship shape” – all expenses clearly listed with a total (Excel or expense reporting software use encouraged), all receipts neatly organized in a single .pdf file, and a mailing address, phone number and e-mail address for a single point of contact would be required.
To minimize SDYCSF administrative burden, a maximum of three reimbursement requests in any annual period would be allowed.
Reimbursement requests must be sent to: SDYCSF@gmail.com
The SDYCSF would fund this program from the Bill Bennett endowment maintained by the SDYCSF.
